The mountain village of Metaxada is built at an altitude of 538 metres and has about 100 permanent residents. It is 10 km from Chora and 8 km from Maniaki. In ancient times, the settlement and surrounding area were part of Nestor’s kingdom, King of ancient Pylos.
The current village of Metaxada (formerly known as Sapriki) was one of Messenia's most important centres of silk production. Its modern name was probably given to it because of this. According to local tradition respectively, the older name of the village Skarmiga (today's Metamorphosis) probably comes from the Chinese word "Scarminx", which means "the road of silk". The silk was transported through α dirt road, which passed through the villages mentioned before and reached the port of Pylos for export and further processing. It should be noted that the route Sapriki-port of Pylos, with loaded horses and mules, lasted 8 hours.
In the village, visitors can admire the traditional houses and the church of Agios Athanasios, which celebrates on January 18th.
Every year, on the occasion of the celebration of Agios Georgios, there is a festival with various cultural events and happenings in the village. The races of Metaxada have a special place in the events. Finally, near the village is the historic Monastery of Metaxada (also known as the Monastery of Agios Georgios), which is dedicated to Agios Georgios - one of the important monuments of the post-Byzantine period in the area.
