Monastery of Agios Nikitas

The Monastery of Agios Nikitas is located at the top of the mountain Ai-Lias, (at an altitude of 850 meters), near the mountain village of Sellas, which is 19 km from Kyparissia. In the historic monastery, Saint Nikitas the Goth celebrates on September 15th. The monastery dates back to the 16th century and is included in the list of archaeological sites and monuments declared by the Greek Ministry of Culture. From a pastoral point of view, Agios Nikitas is not precisely a monastery but a chapel that belongs to the church of the Holy Trinity in the village of Sellas. The name "monastery" prevailed because, in the past, there was a monastery that, during its heyday, had privately owned estates, orchards and goats and sheep.
In the courtyard of the Monastery of Agios Nikitas, there are two century-old oaks that date back to about 400 years. Here, the fighters from Sellas knelt under the two oaks and prayed to the village's patron saint (Agios Nikitas) to help them face the Turkish troops of Ibrahim that were coming after the burning of Aetos Trifyllia, on their way to Maniaki.
The Monastery of Agios Nikitas was restored in 1881. Officially, it is recorded in a list of churches in the Grimani General Archives of Venice in 1697: "... On the mountain, there is an old monastery, the church of Agios Nikitas. Covered with a dome. It has a couple of fields, Christians' tributes from ancient times ..."
