Kalamata Mountaineering Association-Hiking: Poliani/Agrilos
Spread the word
The Association's last excursion for 2024 will take place on Sunday, December 15th, on the path connecting the settlements of Agrilos and Poliani.
The path was opened in 1950-51 to shorten the distance and communication between the two villages, replacing an older route. The path climbs from Agrilos in an easterly direction on the slopes of the Syroka River and, in its most significant part, moves high above the "Tsiroremma", one of the most impressive gorges of Messenia, which starts its route from the western slopes of the northern Taygetos.
The historical elements and monuments in these areas are rich. In the extensive but sparsely populated Agrilos, we find several old churches, some of which were built centuries ago and are remarkable Byzantine monuments. Poliani has greater historical fame as the birthplace of the hero of the revolution of 1821, Papaflessas (also known as Grigorios Dikaios).
