LET'S GO FOR A WALK-A walk to SELINITSA
Fishermen from Riglia, who lived in huts on the coast, first inhabited Selinitsa. After the revolution, people started coming down from the surrounding villages to boil the lupins, wash the "liopana" (the pieces of fabric they used to pick the olives) in the sea, and collect salt.
The settlement developed rapidly at the beginning of the 20th century because it was used as a port for Kalamata and Piraeus. Especially at the port, the village resembles an island, while the large stone houses with shops remind it of the commercial boom it lived through.
The islet in Ai Demetrius was the ancient Pefnos, where, according to Pausanias, the Dioscuri statues were. The dominant building of the settlement is the tower of Captain Christodoulos Christeas.
