Companions in NATURE-Saint Irene/Fossilised Forest/Kastania Cave
Spread the word
The holy pilgrimage place (monastery) of Agia Irini was built at the end of the 19th century on the ruins of an earlier church, and later, some more additions were made to the buildings. The cell of monk Kalogeroyannis is preserved to this day, while several small other cells are scattered throughout the wider area, which confirms the existence of monks throughout the centuries.
Also significant is the Saint George church, which dates from the half of the 15th century. To reach Ai Giorgis, we follow a small path that starts behind Agia Irini. In just five minutes, we will have reached our destination. The frescoes inside the temple (the church is open) testify to the age of the building. Here, of course, the eyes of the saints are destroyed, and this is what the legend says: it happened during a pirate raid when the invaders tried with their swords to destroy the frescoes.
