Self-made Johnny Case is engaged to a woman from a wealthy family and, feeling trapped by the expectations of wealth, plans to take the first few years of their marriage on vacation to experience life before settling down. His plan is met with disbelief by everyone except his fiancee's eccentric sister.
The film is an adaptation of Philip Barry's play of the same name, which premiered on Broadway in 1928. It's a fun and charming comedy, with Cukor again demonstrating his talent for balancing humour with passion and social criticism. His direction is masterful, with impeccable flow and visual perfection. The dialogue is exceptionally witty, and the chemistry between Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn is undeniable.
The film was a commercial failure despite good reviews. Perhaps American audiences still struggling to recover from the Depression of 1929 did not identify with the protagonist's unconventional plans to quit his job and go on vacation. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Art Direction.
