Filmhouse/New Kalamata Cinema Club-ABDUCTION
Spread the word
How did Lydia's life, as a young midwife devoted to her work, derail? Is it her recent breakup, her best friend Salome's pregnancy, or her out-of-the-blue encounter with Milos, a potential new love? Lydia gets caught up in a series of lies, and everyone's lives are turned upside down.
From the first notes of the excellent romantic soundtrack signed by Alexandre de la Baume and the novel out-of-frame narration, the first directorial effort of the French Iris Kaltenbach prepares the viewer for a French film unlike her other contemporaries, immersed in an otherworldly romance, shot in a Paris that does not resemble the glamorous one decor we are used to, a sad metropolis inhabited by lonely souls looking for communication. Guided by a masterfully structured script, she impresses in her debut by flirting with the psychological thriller and the film noir, creating a captivating atmosphere of ambiguity and, simultaneously, a unique character in the face of the lonely Lydia.
The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival Critics' Week, where it won the SACD Screenplay Award. It also won the Screenplay and Performance Award at the Turin Film Festival. It was Nominated for the CÉSAR Awards for Best First Film and Performance. The film was shown in the Competition Programme of the 24th French-language Film Festival in Athens and won the Jury Prize for the Best Film of the Festival.
