The Violione Orchestra of the University of Macedonia in Kalamata
Spread the word
The Violione Orchestra of the University of Macedonia will be in our city, and you can attend two music and dance performances at the Kalamata Dance Megaron on 8/12/2024 and a concert and a seminar at the Kalamata Music School on 9/12.
The Koryvantes Folklore Society, in collaboration with the Kalamata Music School, has organised the event, and we invite you all to attend this original idea.
The "Violione Orchestra" was created in 2018. It is a 25-member bow-string orchestra of violin students specialising in the Traditional Music Department of the Department of Music Science & Art of the University of Macedonia. It is a member of its Poetry Laboratory and takes place as part of the undergraduate course "Archer's Workshop Strings" of the Department of the same name. With already two personal record albums under her belt, the primary pursuit of the musical ensemble is the presentation of a repertoire, mostly of Greek music of the Balkans and the wider Eastern Mediterranean, but also new contemporary compositions through a creative prism of orchestration and application of older but also more modern interpretation techniques of bowed strings.
It is an alternative musical proposal of a partnership of bow strings to develop interactivity and constantly explore channels of musical communication between them with abundant improvisational mood. The main objective of the orchestra is to feed the field of expertise in bow-string interpretation in general with new elements that will contribute to highlighting the expressive specificity of the "language" of the violin family in the various folk oral traditions. To date, the Violione Orchestra has performed more than 40 performances in featured venues, several of which have been fully subsidised by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.
