Konstantinos Dousis–Sculptor
Konstantinos Dousis was born in 1985 in Kalamata. He studied at the "Maria Kallas" Music School of Kalamata, from where he graduated in 2003, and continued to play music and saxophone at the Municipal Philharmonic of Kalamata. The stimulus for his involvement in sculpture and drawing was "born" in his father's marble shop.
In 2000-2002, he attended free drawing classes with his teacher Tasos Aridas and clay sculpture with Kostas Argyris at the Municipal Art Workshop of Kalamata. From 2002 to 2006, he studied at the Fine Arts School of Panormos Tinos (with sculptor Charalambos Kritikos as a teacher) while at the same time, in the period 2003-2004, he was at the Marble Sculpture Workshop of Antonis Hondrogiannis (Pyrgos Tinos).
From 2008 until today, he has been working at the "Dousis" Marble Sculpture Workshop, which is based in Thouria, Messenia. As he has characteristically stated: "...You have to respect marble, go with its own protocol and have patience and perseverance". His works (mainly busts) "decorate" the city of Kalamata, as well as other regions of Greece, with the last being the statue of Alexander Onassis (2.20 metres high) at the airport of Kythira.
Some of the artistic creations of Constantinos Dousis are the Monument to Fallen Fighters (1912-1922) in Ariochori, Messenia, the Hero of the Greek-American Foundation "Plant your roots in Greece" in Taygetos, the marble church icon in the church of Agios Ioannis on the beach Kalamata, the bust of doctor Venetsanos Saravas on the Cross of West Mani, the bust of Nikitaras (Nikitas Stamatelopoulos) in Kalamata, the marble inscription of the Kalamata Music School "Maria Kallas" etc.
Konstantinos Dousis has taken part in the group exhibitions "2006 Students of the School of Fine Arts of Tinos" ("Hermoupolia Syros"), "Art Walks - Art in Showcases" ("Cultural Antilogous") and "The Art of Love" a group exhibition for the support of the Municipal Grocery of Kalamata. Also, in 2006 and 2007, he received a commendation in marble work from the Ministry of Aegean and Island Policy for the academic years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006.
In conclusion, it is worth mentioning that in 2022, in a symbolic move for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures, a copy of the West Frieze was placed in the building of the Hellenic Community in Melbourne, Australia. The construction of the non-faithful copies (with marble from the Dionysos quarry) bears the signatures of Kostas Dousis and Panagiotis Vassilakis, and the unveiling took place on October 22, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs N. Chardalias and the Mayor of Kalamata, Thanasis Vassilopoulos.
