Ioannis Liarakos-The heroic fighter of the Revolution of 1821
Ioannis Liarakos was born in the village of Koita. He was a second-class non-commissioned officer of the Greek War of Independence and emerged as one of the heroic fighters who offered invaluable service to the struggle for freedom. Brave and devoted to his homeland, he participated in significant battles that proved pivotal to the revolution's progress.
As a second-class officer, Ioannis Liarakos not only led but also financially supported 25 revolutionaries under his command. Using his own resources, he ensured their sustenance, weaponry, and equipment at a time when resources were scarce and the revolution depended heavily on the self-sacrifice of its fighters. His generosity and selflessness demonstrate his unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom and his deep sense of responsibility towards his comrades. This tangible contribution makes him a leadership role model, prioritising the success and well-being of his team over personal interest, ensuring their resilience on the battlefield.
According to a testimony by Anastasios Mavromichalis, Liarakos fought with unparalleled courage in the Battle of Valtetsi on May 12th-13th, 1821, one of the revolutionaries' first major victories. Later, he distinguished himself in the Battle of Styra on January 12, 1822, playing a decisive role in defending the region from Turkish forces.
His efforts did not stop there. On June 13, 1825, Liarakos took part in the Battle of Mylos, one of many encounters marking the resistance against Ibrahim Pasha’s forces. His final and most heroic stand was at the Battle of Verga from June 22nd to 25th, 1826. There, leading 25 revolutionaries whom he personally supported, he fought to the end. According to Mavromichalis, Liarakos heroically fell in this battle, leaving his name etched in the annals of history.
After the revolution, the state honoured his sacrifice. King Otto's decree provided for the dowry of his daughter, Maroula, as a recognition of his contribution to Greece’s liberation.
Ioannis Liarakos' story remains an example of selfless dedication to the homeland, reminding us of the importance of sacrifice and devotion to the common cause.
