CLEAN MESSENIA 2026-GIALOVA LAGOON
Spread the word
Let’s Put Waste in Its Place and Protect Our Region’s Fragile Ecosystems!
After four years of successful action through the "Clean Messenia" program, we are back with even greater passion and determination. The response so far has been truly inspiring and has proven that collective effort creates real impact.
What Have We Achieved Together So Far?
- More than 360 volunteers from Greece and abroad joined forces.
- 35,000 litres of waste were removed from coastal areas.
- Over 8 tons of recyclable materials were collected.
- More than 5 tons of ghost nets and abandoned fishing gear were recovered from the environment.

Why Is Your Participation So Important?
The Gialova Lagoon is much more than a beautiful landscape. It is a 2,500-acre wetland of vital importance to Europe, serving as a key resting and feeding station for migratory birds travelling to Africa.
The lagoon is home to dozens of rare species, most notably the African chameleon, a species facing the risk of extinction.
Unfortunately, this unique ecosystem is under increasing pressure from human activities, including littering, pollution, and mass tourism. It is up to all of us to help reverse this trend, guided by internationally recognised environmental monitoring and action protocols.
Join Us and Help Make Messenia Shine!
Together, we can protect our natural heritage and leave a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.
