Ioannis Iliopoulos - Physicist
THE GREEK - INTERNATIONAL PHYSICIST
Ioannis Iliopoulos is a distinguished contemporary Greek elementary particle physicist whose scientific work has made a significant contribution to the development of research worldwide. Born on March 18th, 1940 in Kalamata, he completed his undergraduate studies at the National Technical University of Athens. In 1962, he received his diploma in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He continued his studies at the Theoretical Physics Department of the University of Paris. In 1963 he received the D.E.A., in 1965 the Doctorat 3e Cycle and in 1968 the Doctorat d'Etat.
From 1964 to 1966 he held the title of Curator of Physics at the University of Paris. From 1966 to 1968 he was a fellow at the CERN in Geneva. From 1969 to 1971 he was a Research Associate at Harvard University.
Since 1971 he has been working at the National Research Center of France (CNRS) and since 1978 as Research Director at the Ecole Normale Superieure Theoretical Physics Laboratory in Paris. During his career, Iliopoulos has received many international awards. He has also been declared Member of the French Academy of Sciences, (2002), and corresponding member of the Academy of Athens, (1980). He is an honorary doctor of the Universities of Crete (1999), Ioannina (2002), Athens (2002) and Patras (2004).
