Spread the word

On Sunday, April 13th, 2025, the Kalamata Mountaineering Association is organising a speleological excursion in Messenian Exo Mani to the Katafygi Selinitsa cave. This is a special route of moderate difficulty, with an approximate four-hour duration inside the cave.
In the Municipal District of Agios Nikolaos, in the Municipality of West Mani, on the road to Trachila, 3.5 km west, is the beautiful "Katafygi" cave, which experts who have visited it consider one of the largest in the country.
Inside the cave, there is magnificent decoration with beautiful complexes on the ceiling, floor and wall. The impressive entrance with the large marble slabs was once the mouth of a river that passed through it, opening galleries and channels in the marble. The found shells and bones testify that it was used as a place of residence and worship.
The specific area of its galleries is approximately 900 m., but its total length is estimated at 1,600 m. A large part of it was explored by Yannis Petrochilos and the Swedish biospeleologist Lindberg in 1953, while I. Ioannou continued the research.
Difficulty level: 1+
Walking time: 4-5 hours
Departure: from the Association's reception on Sunday, 13/04/2025 at 8:00 a.m.
