Grammeno
The small island of Proti, across Marathopoli, was among others a pirates’ base. Here, the pirate Katoulias had action and he was one of the reasons why the inhabitants had to move 5 kilometers higher in Gargalianoi, in order to be able to control the area, as it is a natural observatory.
Many were the times when the northern bay of the island has served as a natural breakwater, protecting pirate ships from the force of waves. There, they used to engrave inscriptions on the rocks requesting a safe journey. Those inscriptions, existing still, are the reason why the bay is called “Grammeno”, (in Greek meaning “written”).
You can reach it by sea and is, definitely, worth visiting. The rocks have dozen of past’s stories to tell, while the blue waters of the sea will recall you at the present for a refreshing dive.
