Evklis-New Year's Pie event at the Loukos Holy Monastery
Spread the word
The hikers and friends of the "Efklis" Kalamata Hikers-Mountainers Association will travel to the Holy Monastery of Loukou on January 21st, 2024.
- In a beautiful location of Kynouria, on the plain of Thyrea and a relatively short distance west of the historical Astros, one of the most essential Monastic Centres of the whole of Arcadia, the Loukos Monastery, is built.
- The Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, popularly known as the Loukos Monastery, owes its name according to one version to the Latin word Lucus, which means sacred forest, grove, forest.
- The Lukous monastery, surrounded by mountains, dominates the entrance to the plain of the Tanos River and is located next to the river 3 km from Astros, where there were settlements in ancient times.
- The Monastery offered important services to the nation during the Turkish occupation (strengthening the schools in the area), but also during the War of Independence, which caused it to be set on fire by Ibrahim's forces in 1826.
- The wood-carved iconostasis, despotic icons, and the miraculous icon of the Transfiguration date back to the middle of the 17th century.
- Old books, manuscripts, patriarchal documents and other relics are kept in the remarkable library of Loukos Monastery.
