The mountain village of Avlona is built at an altitude of 635 meters and has about 100 permanent residents. It is 24 km from Kyparissia and 5 km from Sidirokastro. The village is located between two hills of the Nomia Mountains. The oldest name of the village, during the Turkish occupation, was Karamoustafa. It was the seat of the Turkish Aga from whom it took its name. It was renamed Avlona in 1922, after ancient Avlona, which was probably built in the same area. It is mentioned, in fact, by Xenophon, Strabo and traveller Pausanias.
In the village square with the century-old plane tree, the visitor can see the church of Agios Georgios, built in 1831. In the southwestern part of the square, there is a monument dedicated to the fallen who lost their lives in favour of their homeland, which is dominated by the figure of Alexander the Great, as well as the figures of 1821 and 1940 warriors. There is also the bust of the doctor and fighter of the National Resistance, Panagiotis T. Kanellopoulos (1906-1979), who came from Avlona. Finally, at the village entrance, there is the bust of the founder of the MINION" department stores, Ioannis D. Georgakas (1913-2002), who also came from the village.
