Just 10 km from the city of Kalamata is located Micromani. Its first residents reportedly came from the Despotate of Mystras, while it is believed to be nationals/citizens of the last reigning Roman and Byzantine Emperor, Palaeologus or Palaeologue,
In the area, during the period of the second Turkish occupation (1715-1821), the province of Kioujiukmani (Micromani) was established by the Turks to distinguish it from the great Mani.
Micromani is very fertile land since it runs through several rivers and canals which flow from the edge of Taygetos. Although it produces numerous vegetables and fruits, it is especially known for its wild Artichoke, which is a key source of income for residents. In fact, every July, the festival of artichoke takes place in the central square, with the women of the village offering the attendees various dishes based on artichoke.
