Sotirianika is built at the foothills of Taygetos at an altitude of 350 metres. It is 16 kilometres from Kalamata and consists of the settlements of Sotirianika, Charavgi, Kouris and Drosopigi. According to tradition, the village took its name from its first settler, Sotiris Menousis, who came from Anogeia in Sparta.
Archaeological findings discovered by chance in 1938 indicate the existence of Mycenaean habitation in the village. Among other things, golden offerings, such as a two-sided golden cup with relief representations of trees, an amphora, a disk, and a semicircular crown, were found in an urn.
The famous historical preserved, stone-paved path called Biliovo that ends in Altomira begins from the village. The old Koskaraka bridge, which consists of an arch resting on natural rock and dates back to the period of the Turkish occupation, as well as the newer bridge of Koskaraka, which is an essential technical construction, are also worth visiting.
In the village, visitors can see the old building of the Primary School, which is a representative sample of the local folk architecture and has been classified as a historic monument by the Ministry of Culture. One of the area’s most important attractions is the Tower of the Captains, which dominates Petrovouni hill and is open to the public.
Finally, in the "Mavrinitsa" location is the church of Agia Kyriaki, which dates back to the end of the 13th - beginning of the 14th century. It is a one-room, arched temple built next to a large threshing floor and has been classified as a historic monument by the Ministry of Culture.
