Saint Nicholas Church

In the heart of Sidirokastro stands the Church of Agios Nikolaos, a central point of reference for the local community and a living monument of history and faith.
The church was built in 1912 with well-crafted hewn stone, on the site of an older church that had been destroyed by the devastating raids of Ibrahim during the Revolution. It belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Trifylia and Olympia. It is one of the most distinctive churches in the area thanks to its architecture and the historical relics it houses. Inside are important religious and national relics, such as the holy chalice with which the area's chieftains received communion in 1821, as well as the sacred Gospel with which they were initiated into the Filiki Eteria (Company of Friends). These objects connect the church with the most heroic moments of the Struggle for Freedom, giving it invaluable historical value.
Around it, traditional stone-built houses with distinctive tiled roofs complete the image of a village that keeps the spirit of the past alive. Agios Nikolaos church is a witness to Sidirokastro's history, holding memories that are passed down from generation to generation.
