The three-day, thematic, site-specific festival “In the Footsteps of Kazantzakis and Zorbas”, organised by the non-profit organisation KALLIERGON syn and taking place from September 25th to 27th, 2026, is born from a place and a meeting that left an indelible mark on the life and work of Nikos Kazantzakis.
The festival draws its inspiration from a defining period in his life: his brief stay in Mani and his collaboration with Giorgis Zorbas at the lignite mines of Prastova, near Stoupa.
It was here that a profound human friendship was forged between two men from very different worlds. Their relationship was not based on similarity, but on the encounter of opposites, and it would go on to inspire the creation of one of the most iconic characters in world literature.
For Kazantzakis, Zorbas was a mirror reflecting a side of himself, a force, a sense of freedom, and an immediate connection with life that he could approach only through friendship. The festival unfolds in the very places where this encounter took place, between the earth being excavated, the sea opening up the horizon, and the human being striving for freedom.
Through artistic and narrative activities specially designed for these locations, audiences are invited not merely to attend, but to walk alongside the story and become part of the journey.
Because this festival is much more than a cultural event. It is a journey through time, place, and the human experience, where memory is not preserved passively, but transmitted and reactivated as a contemporary form of intangible cultural heritage.
The festival is co-organised with the Region of Peloponnese, in collaboration with the Municipality of West Mani, with the support of the Messenia Chamber, and in collaboration with the NARTURA Cultural Association for Art and Nature.
