The picturesque, small fishing village of Agios Dimitrios is located at ancient Pefnos, with its rocky islet southeast of Agios Nikolaos in Western Mani. At Agios Dimitrios, Paris anchored with his ships and waited for Beautiful Helen and her captors to board and leave for Troy. According to another myth, on the small, rocky islet of Agios Dimitrios, the Dioskouroi brothers were born, twin sons of Zeus, heroes of antiquity and brothers of Helen of Troy.
On the road to Trachila, 3.5 km west, the visitors can see the unexploited cave called "Katafygio", which is considered one of the largest in Greece, according to experts who have visited it. The cave was the ideal hiding place for many people, especially during the years of the Ottoman rule, which is why it was named this way. Its length is estimated at 2 km. A large part of the cave was explored in 1953 by Giannis Petrocheilou and Swedish speleologist K. Lindberg. Later, in 1972, speleologist Ioannis Ioannou continued the exploration and characterised it as: "... a monument of nature and one of the most important caves in our country".
