The small, picturesque village of Agia Sofia is located on the eastern bank of the Vyros river, very close to Old Kardamyli. The village is also connected to Kardamyli via a path for hiking enthusiasts. It is built at an altitude of 180 metres and is 42 kilometres from Kalamata. The village took its name from the church that dominates the outskirts, while its oldest name was Gournitsa.
In the village, visitors can see the small church of Panagitsa, founded in 1768, and the stone-built church of Agia Sophia, located on the edge of the hill, overlooking the plain of Kardamyli. It is an inscribed, cruciform, rectangular temple with a dome bearing a tall twelve-sided drum. The church was built in 1630, while it was painted in 1700 by hagiographer Georgios Makrymallis.
