Riglia consists of the settlements of Ano Riglia, Elaiochori (Izina) and Kato Riglia. The three settlements were created at the beginning of the 19th century by the Gennimateas, Christeas and Kyvalas families and are built in a lane between two streams that start from Mount Milea.
The small, traditional village of Ano Riglia is located at the southwestern end of Mount Taygetos, in the area of the Messenian Mani. It is built at an altitude of 120 metres (on a plateau among olive groves) and is 48 kilometres from Kalamata. Pantazis beach is also nearby.
The Byzantine/Post-Byzantine Church of the Assumption, which has been declared a preserved monument by the Ministry of Culture, stands out in the village with the stone-paved alleys and stone-built houses. It is a one-room structural temple with a six-sided dome, a semi-hexagonal dome, and a sanctuary arch on the outside. Access to the temple is through four doors, two on the south and one on the west and north faces.
The Byzantine/Post-Byzantine church of Agios Georgios, which, in turn, has been declared a protected monument, is also worth visiting. Specifically, it is a single-room, stone-built, tile-roofed church with a built-in iconostasis and an impressive bell tower. A simple, stone-built space for auxiliary use was later added along the length of its northern side. Above the communication door of the two rooms, part of a microgrammatic inscription of the owner is preserved. The church of Agios Georgios is recorded with folk art frescoes from the second half of the 18th century. Finally, children's toys have been carved on the upper part of the temple enclosure wall.
