Screening-Weekend Rebels
Spread the word
The Athens Children & Teens International Film Festival for 2024, powered by PPC, returns for the seventh consecutive year from November 18th to 24th at the Athens Concert Hall, Kifisia 1 & 2 Cinemax and Danaos Cinemas, the French Institute of Greece and the Museum of Cycladic Art. The Festival's dynamic slogan is "Get Up!" inviting the audience to face life's challenges with optimism and courage.
At any age, we may face setbacks and difficult times. Negative emotions are a part of our lives. But how do we overcome obstacles and failures? How do we find the courage to continue? How do we find our hidden smile again? These are the main questions that concern this year's Festival, urging young viewers to find the strength within themselves, to "get up" and move forward.
"#GetUp doesn't mean ignoring problems. It means acknowledging them and moving forward. Let's get up stronger again! To dare even when no one guarantees the result of the effort. To shout even when no one is listening. These are the messages of the Athens International Film Festival for Children & Adolescents 2024 powered by PPC: optimism, determination, hope, perseverance", says the Director of the Festival, Kalliopi Charalambous Krief.
The Weekend Rebels is shown live in the Children's Reading Room of the Kalamata Public Library as part of the collaboration between the Athens Children and Adolescents' International Film Festival, the Kalamata Children and Adolescent Film Festival and the Filmhouse/Kalamata Cinema Club.
In the film, Mirko travels a lot for his work, while his wife, Fatima, takes it upon herself to organise their demanding family life. The daily life of their 10-year-old son, Jason, who is on the autism spectrum, consists of daily routines and non-negotiable rules. When the family is forced to send Jason to a special education school, Mirko makes a deal with his son: Jason promises to do his best in school if his dad helps him find out which is his favourite soccer team. However, Jason doesn't want to decide which club he prefers until he sees all 56 teams from the first, second and third German leagues live in their respective stadiums. It has very distinct criteria, from mascots, sustainability and player rituals to the colours of football boots. On their travels to Germany, father and son leave their home routine behind and find everything they never looked for but definitely needed.
Why we love it: This open-hearted portrayal of a boy's adventurous spirit (based on a true story) beautifully showcases not only his passion for soccer but also his parents' tireless devotion. With humour and sensitivity, it sheds light on the everyday heroes who encourage children's dreams and cultivate precious values with the ultimate goal of something universal and human: their child's happiness, cinema in France and China, as well as for performances in America.
