Let's Go Walk-Event for the October 28th, 1940 Anniversary
Spread the word
The Kalamata Greek History Group of Friends is organising an event on the theme of choosing October 28th as our national holiday.
October 28th, 1940, has been established in the collective memory as a symbolic day for two reasons:
Firstly, the decision of our country's political leadership to reject the Italian state's request for the abolition of national sovereignty. Secondly, we must consider the heroic actions of the Greek army and the civilian population.
However, in the post-colonial period, a narrative developed that attempted to portray the specific historical event with a latent ideological orientation.
The first point of the argument is who said "no" (the political leadership or the people).
The second point of contention is whether it makes sense to celebrate the start of the war instead of its end in May 1945. Many ask, "Why are we the only country in Europe that, instead of the end of the war, celebrates the start of it?" Recently, there has been a discussion of replacing the anniversary of October 28th with that of October 12th, when Athens was liberated.
The following will speak:
- Marios Athanasopoulos, historian
- Dimitris Kaounis, lawyer
The discussion will be moderated by Giorgos Plemmenos, chemist
The event will take place on Monday, October 28th at 7.30 pm in the Rex Hotel Hall.
