The Pame Volta Group, in collaboration with the Education for the Environment and Sustainability Centre (Kalamata), is organising a special tour of the Pamisos River Dam in honour of World Wetlands Day.
An essential point of reference for natural wealth is the Pamisos River Dam area, next to the Aris settlement. This dam has created an area with unique natural characteristics, both lake and riverside. It hosts important species of wildlife. Nine freshwater fish species have been identified, two endemic to N. Peloponnese, 125 species of birds and the rare mammal "otter" referred to by the locals with the ancient Greek name "Kynopotamos". Also, endemic water-loving plants of the South Peloponnese have been identified, riverside forests of plane tree, lowland elm, willow and silverweed, as well as aquatic and water-loving flora with characteristics of the marsh iris, water lilies, myrtle, and riverside moorland.
