Kalamata Tennis Club
Founded in 1980 by a group of tennis enthusiasts, the Kalamata Tennis Club (O.A.K.) has operated continuously ever since. Initially, the club was based at the tennis courts of the Elite Hotel, before relocating to the Filoxenia Hotel following the devastating earthquakes of 1986. In the early 1990s, it found a permanent home at the Tenta Sports Hall courts, and, since 2004, it has also been operating at the Western Beach tennis facilities.
The club's development has been shaped by the dedication of its Presidents over the years, including G. Ondrias, Al. Boufeas, Koukoutsis, P. Barnasas, Ar. Fragkou, K. Makris, G. Kounadis, and D. Lampropoulos.
Special recognition is due to Konstantinos Makris, whose 17-year presidency established the club as one of Greece's leading tennis organisations. Under his leadership, the club successfully hosted numerous prestigious events, including Greek National Championships, Regional Championships, Open tournaments, the World University Games, and the National Medical Professionals Championship. He also served as First Vice President of the Hellenic Tennis Federation (H.T.F.) and today holds the honorary title of Honorary Vice President of the Hellenic Tennis Federation.
During his tenure, the club also established the annual ITF World Tennis Championship, a tournament that welcomed future international stars at the beginning of their careers, including Roger Federer, who later became World No. 1, and Nicolas Escudé, who reached World No. 10 in the ATP rankings.
The club's competitive team competed in Greece's A1 National Division from 2000 to 2008, thanks in large part to the outstanding contributions of players Christos Christopoulos, Panagiotis Kalogeropoulos, Panos Stavrianeas, and, later, Dimitris Loukareas.
Over the years, hundreds of people from Kalamata have been introduced to tennis through the club's programs. The club has organised dozens of international and national tournaments and has developed numerous athletes through its academy who have gone on to achieve success at the national level.
Today, under the presidency of George Chrysanthakopoulos, the Kalamata Tennis Club operates seven tennis courts, modern offices, and a clubhouse, continuing to serve as a vibrant hub for both young players and adult tennis enthusiasts.
