Folklore and Cultural Association of Chora
The Folklore and Cultural Association of Chora was founded in April 1991 and has remained active ever since, with the mission of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of Chora and the wider region, while contributing to the cultural awareness and development of the local community.
The Association's work is driven by the voluntary commitment of its members, who are its greatest source of strength, as well as by the generous support of individual sponsors. Throughout the year, it organises a wide range of cultural and community activities. Over the years, the Association has undertaken numerous initiatives, including cultural events, volunteer actions, participation in European projects, traditional and folk dance classes, a traditional and Byzantine music choir, the establishment of a Folklore Museum, and many other cultural programs.
The Association is honoured to be a member of the International Organisation of Folk Art (IOV) and the International Dance Council (CID). It has participated in performances at the Dora Stratou Theatre in Athens, World Dance Day celebrations, and numerous cultural events and festivals across Greece and abroad. Today, it has more than 200 members and continues to welcome new participants.
Its primary objective is to promote its activities and initiatives for the cultural, intellectual, social, and environmental enhancement of the region. At the same time, it seeks to provide a platform for cultural expression in all its forms, particularly for younger generations, always guided by the values of Greek tradition, customs, and heritage.
Throughout the year, the Association organises events that reflect its mission and values. These include Carnival celebrations and the annual dance, participation in national commemorations, the revival of traditional customs and local practices, such as the "Pig Rendering" tradition, the revival of traditional children's games, the celebration of the Feast of Saint John (Klidonas), gatherings of cultural associations from across the municipality, folklore exhibitions, art music concerts, performances by the Association's choir, and the organisation of the Traditional Dance Festival, which has been held annually since 2006.
The members of the Association firmly believe in preserving and passing on the rich heritage of Greek tradition, safeguarding it from every form of cultural erosion. Supporting this mission is a dedicated team of distinguished instructors, experienced educators, and specialists, whose expertise ensures the highest quality in every aspect of the Association's work.
