Martín and Mariana live in apartment buildings directly across from one another in Buenos Aires. They walk the same streets, visit the same shops, and may even stand only a few metres apart, yet they never truly meet. Martín is a web designer, immersed in a digital world that keeps him isolated. Mariana is an architect and window dresser, trying to rebuild her life after the end of a relationship.
With Medianeras (Sidewalls), director Gustavo Taretto creates a tender urban romantic comedy about loneliness in modern cities, where apartments become both sanctuaries and prisons, and where screens connect us while simultaneously keeping us apart. Buenos Aires, more than a backdrop, plays a living, breathing character that both separates and brings people together.
The film explores the longing to find meaningful human connection amid the chaos of city life. Quiet, bittersweet, and deeply heartfelt, it tells the story of two people who seem destined for one another but must first learn how to step beyond the windows they have built around themselves.
Medianeras was Gustavo Taretto's feature-film debut, expanding on his award-winning short film of the same name. Following its release, it was screened at numerous international film festivals and became one of Latin America's most celebrated contemporary urban romantic comedies. Its enduring appeal lies in the way it transforms architecture, technology, and metropolitan loneliness into a touching story of hope, patience, and human connection.
