"Poseidon" Kalamata Nautical Club
The "Poseidon" Nautical Club of Kalamata (N.O.K.) is a natural continuation and development of maritime sports activity in Kalamata's maritime arena that began in 1924. The Club took its official form in 1932 with the establishment of the Nautical-Sports-Football Association "Poseidon", with swimming, diving and sailing with "passara" type boats departments. In 1952, it received its final form as the "Poseidon" Nautical Club of Kalamata.
The purpose of the Club is to enable young people of all ages to play sports in the multiple sports it maintains (swimming, water polo, sailing, volleyball and chess). At this point, we should mention that the chess department was founded in 1970 (the first in the whole of Messenia), while in 1977, the Hellenic Sailing Centre (E.K.I.) was founded in Kalamata with four other Greek cities.
The Group also aims to protect the marine environment and spread the country's Maritime history. Every year, it carries out a series of cultural, educational and social activities and events to strengthen the members' relations.
In 2006, at the Maritime Club of Kalamata initiative, the Monument to the Unknown Sailor, designed by sculptor Aikaterini Kosmas-Tsavaras, was placed on the port's waterfront. Also, in 2002, the Club organised the first Panhellenic Open Sea Swimming Championship, while in 2012, the first Volunteer Bone Marrow Donor Cup was held, with the aim of spreading the message of blood donation and the donation of primordial hematopoietic cells.
