The Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata
The Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata is located north of Ypapantis square, at the corner of Alexandrakis street and Villeardouinou square, at the foothills of the city's Venetian castle. It was founded in October 1985 and is housed in a neoclassical three-storey building from the middle of the 19th century, in the premises of which, in the past, the first Gymnasium of Kalamata had operated, as well as other schools. Since its establishment, more than 10,000 students have attended lessons at the Municipal Conservatory, many of whom now have significant international careers. The artistic director of the Kalamata Municipal Conservatory and Kalamata International Choir Festival is Stathis Gyftakis, who was born in Kalamata in 1967 and has studied piano and composition.
At the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata, almost all orchestral instruments (except oboe, horn, tuba and double bass) and jazz, rock, pop and traditional music are taught. The conservatory has four choirs and a small Symphonic Orchestra of twenty students.
Throughout the year, many seminars are organised at the Municipal Conservatory. At the same time, every summer (as part of the Kalamata International Music Days Festival), international masterclasses are held in cello, violin, piano, lyrical singing and stage presence. Equally important is the "Guitar Festival", which is organised every year and includes concerts, seminars, presentations and guitar competitions, named after the great soloist and composer of the guitar, Gerasimos Miliaresis, a student of the legendary Andres Segovia. Finally, the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata co-organises several musical events in collaboration with Greek and foreign cultural institutions, such as the National Opera, the Vienna Children's Choir, the Camerata Orchestra, etc.
