Lyceum Club of Greek Women, in Kalamata - Cultural Association

The Kalamata Lyceum of Greek Women was founded in 1967 and is among the number of Lyceums that exist throughout Greece, but also in Europe, America, Australia, Africa and New Zealand. L.G.W's purpose is to preserve Greek traditions and customs, as well as Greek women's upliftment and progress.

The result of its many years of systematic work in the National Folklore field is the creation of a rare collection of authentic Greek traditional costumes.

The L.G.W. is active in the field of teaching traditional Greek dances. It also has a permanent dance group, which gives dance performances in Greece and abroad with great success and a choir of traditional songs, offering unique musical performances in their subject and artistic perfection.

The L.G.W. has represented Greece in many international events, travelling to countries such as former Yugoslavia, Italy, France, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Sweden, Egypt, USA and Canada.

Its activities, such as organising Festivals of traditional dances and exhibitions of folklore content, contribute decisively to promoting the Greek traditional element.

Its great music and dance productions with a strong theatrical element are a point of reference for the cultural life of the place, while annual children's performances with traditional colour and imagination bring children closer to their Greek cultural roots.

Original folklore programmes, traditional dance and song seminars, and educational trips to traditional settlements and museums contribute to the specialisation of its students' knowledge.

It is also active in folklore publishing and recording CDs of traditional songs. At the same time, it has taken part in radio shows and has appeared on Greek and foreign television.

State and social organisations have repeatedly awarded it for all its activities. It has been rewarded with the respect and recognition of the broader social ensemble as well as the national and local press.

At a time that seeks cultural uniqueness, the L.G.W., faithful to its founders' ideas forty years ago, mobilises all its forces to promote its purpose, its genuine and unadulterated preservation of our traditional Greek heritage.
