The Zoumbouleio Megaron
The Zoumbouleio Megaron is located at the junction of P. Kaisaris and Anagnostaras streets. It is an impressive, eclectic two-storey building by an unknown architect built in 1905. The historic building, which, in the course of the city of Kalamata, played a role in the field of medicine and later education and culture, impresses with the symmetry of its openings and solid morphological elements. The Zoumbouleio Megaron has an attic, which is decorated with gables. At the same time, the external plaster in many places, especially in the corners, imitates stonework (a favourite decorative element of Athenian mansions). Also, its balconies rest on marble piers and are bordered by ornate metal railings.
The Zoumbouleio Megaron was owned by Doctor Konstantinos Zoumboulis, born in Kampos Avia in 1854. His family were descendants of an 1821 aristocratic family of fighters. In fact, his father, Panagiotis Zoumboulis, selflessly offered his services during the Revolution as an empiricist practising physician. In 1897, Konstantinos Zoumboulis founded the "Zoumboulis Clinic", a polyclinic in Kalamata. When he died in 1930, he donated the building (with the wish of becoming a public benefit institution) to the Municipality of Kalamata.
From 1932-1952 the building housed the Commercial School, which was later renamed the Economic High School, while from 1995, it was the seat of the International Dance Festival. Today, the Zoumbouleio Megaron houses the Municipal Dance School of Kalamata - FARIS, equipped with modern and appropriate logistical infrastructure.
