The Historic Town Hall of Kalamata
The Historic Town Hall of Kalamata is located on the pedestrian street of Aristomenous Street in the city’s centre. It is a neoclassical "jewel" which was built in the 1890s. The imposing, two-storey building was the mansion of Panagiotis Psaltis, the well-known Kalamata merchant. The roof of the building is wooden with a coating of French tiles, while its marble balconies and cast-iron railings are also noteworthy.
In the past, the Historic Town Hall building was reconstructed several times. In its original form, the ground floor spaces operated as shops, while the first floor was a residence where King George was hosted in 1898. At the end of the 19th century, a long and narrow addition was built (at the back of the building), covering the entire plot length of Koumantos Street and a section of Nedontos Street. Before the war, the building belonged to the "National Bank", which was housed until 1955, when the Greek State bought it. At that time, the Public Treasury was housed on the ground floor and the Economic Tax Office on the first floor. The third phase of the building's reconstruction took place, around 1960, with the addition of the section on Nedontos Street. In 1966, the building was given to the Municipality of Kalamata, which housed the Town Hall from 1968 until 2017.
Despite the construction of the historic building in three different phases, its four sides show all the morphological characteristics of neoclassicism, such as the openings with arched eaves and pilasters, the symmetrical balconies with the marble floor, the elaborately carved marble “furousia” (horizontal protrusions) etc.
Today, the Town Hall of Kalamata is housed in the building of the old General Hospital of Kalamata (99, Athinon str.). In contrast, the ground floor of the Historic Town Hall of Kalamata houses the Municipal Police (phone: 27213 60742) and the KEP service for serving citizens (27210 360748).
